Leadership Is Earned, Not Granted
“Title doesn’t make you a leader.”
When I stepped into one of my first leadership roles, I truly believed the title itself would create influence.
I assumed people would follow because of my position — because I now had the authority and responsibility.
I was wrong.
What actually earned trust had nothing to do with hierarchy or job titles. It came from showing up consistently, listening deeply, and doing the work alongside the team.
Leadership isn’t something you’re handed when you get promoted — it’s something others decide to give you when they believe in who you are.
It’s observed, earned, and reinforced through daily actions.
The moment I stopped trying to “manage” and started serve, everything changed — team performance improved, the culture strengthened, and trust grew naturally.
As I progressed through different roles — from individual contributor to manager to senior leader — I realized that titles don’t move mountains; people do.
You can have a big title, a large department, or a wide span of control… but if your people don’t trust you, your impact will be limited.
Interestingly, I’ve also seen individuals without any formal authority — sometimes in entirely different departments — exert tremendous leadership.
Why? Because they inspired others through authenticity, empathy, and connection.
Don’t underestimate the power of human connection.
Leading with empathy, trust, and genuine care builds loyalty and commitment that no title can command.
Your title may give you authority — but it’s your character, consistency, and values that earn people’s trust.
Take the time to truly get to know your team.
Understand what motivates them, what challenges them, and what makes them feel valued.
Because every person — just like every leader — is different.
